New Zealand Set to Play First Match Against Afghanistan

Just about a week before the World Cup campaign kicks off, New Zealand is all set to play their opening match against Afghanistan on Saturday, June 8th. The match will begin at 5:00 AM at Guyana's Providence Stadium.

Before the World Cup, Afghanistan was touted as a probable semifinalist by cricketing great Brian Lara. Many were surprised and some even chuckled at Rashid Khan and company's loss against Uganda in their opening match. In that match, Fazalhaq Farooqi set a record of taking 5 wickets in T20 World Cups.

Afghanistan is eyeing victory against New Zealand as well. Since their journey in the T20 World Cup began in 2010, they have been playing superbly in the last three editions. They aim to keep that streak alive against the Black Caps. Beating New Zealand would almost ensure their place in the semifinals.

New Zealand hasn't played any warm-up matches before the World Cup. Captain Kane Williamson and opener Devon Conway are returning for this match. The captain's faith in Trent Boult's bowling is crucial to breaking Afghanistan's batting lineup. Rashid Khan and Isuru Udana have an equal number of 25 wickets each in T20 World Cups, posing a challenge to New Zealand. Both teams are up for a tough battle.
