Earthquake shakes Iran, claims lives of 4 people
A powerful earthquake has struck the northeastern city of Kashmar in Iran, resulting in the loss of lives of 4 individuals and injuries to 120 others.
According to a report by Al-Arabiya citing the local governor, the earthquake hit Kashmar at 1:30 AM local time on Monday (June 17), registering a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale.
It was reported that several older buildings collapsed due to the earthquake, resulting in 35 injuries requiring hospitalization.
The American Geological Survey stated that the earthquake originated 10 kilometers beneath the earth's surface.
Iran's location on several major tectonic plates makes it susceptible to earthquakes. As a result, the country frequently experiences moderate to strong seismic activity, although powerful earthquakes occasionally occur.
