Gun Attack on U.S. Embassy in Lebanon
A gun attack occurred at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Fortunately, no embassy personnel were injured. One gunman has been detained.
The attack happened amidst heightened tensions across the Middle East due to the ongoing Israeli military aggression and massacre in Gaza. On Wednesday morning, June 5th, a gunman attacked the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon.
According to an Al Jazeera report, a Syrian gunman carried out the attack. Embassy security forces responded with gunfire, injuring the attacker. He was then detained and taken to the hospital. The Lebanese Army Command confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that an investigation has been launched.
In a separate statement on social media platform X, the U.S. Embassy confirmed the incident, stating that there was an exchange of "light weapons fire" near the embassy entrance at 8:34 AM local time.
Local media reported that the gunfire lasted for about half an hour, during which a member of the embassy's security team was injured. The reports suggest multiple attackers were involved, and the army is conducting a search for them.
Lebanese security sources indicated that the detained gunman might not have acted alone. Authorities believe that at least four gunmen were involved in the attack.
Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said he is monitoring the situation with army commanders and security officials. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The U.S. Embassy is located in a highly secure area north of Beirut, with multiple checkpoints along the access routes. The embassy was relocated to its current site following a 1983 suicide bombing that killed 63 people.
Since October 7th last year, Israeli military aggression and massacre in Gaza have continued, along with fighting between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah. This situation has significantly heightened tensions in Lebanon.
