US Proposal Sparks Concern from Russia and China
Russia and China have expressed concerns over the US-proposed ceasefire plan for Gaza, presented at the United Nations Security Council. President Joe Biden outlined a framework for ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. This proposal has stirred concern in both Russia and China, reported by the British news agency Reuters.
Analysts suggest that Algeria, the only Arab member of the Security Council, may not be prepared to support the ceasefire proposal. At least nine votes are required in favor of the proposal for it to pass in the Security Council. However, if any of the five permanent members - the United States, France, the United Kingdom, China, or Russia - vetoes it, the proposal will not pass. A week ago, Biden proposed a three-stage ceasefire plan for Gaza, describing it as an Israeli initiative. International support is sought for this plan by the United States. On Monday, a one-page ceasefire proposal was sent to the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council.
A revised version was released on Wednesday. Both versions were seen by Reuters. The current version of the proposal has welcomed the ceasefire proposal. It is described as "acceptable" to Israel. At the same time, Hamas has also been called upon to accept the proposal. Both parties are urged to implement the conditions of the plan promptly and unconditionally.
