Both Israel and Palestine May Be Accused of War Crimes: United Nations
The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has indicated that both Israel and Palestinian armed groups could face accusations of war crimes.
Spokesperson Jeremy Laurence stated that Palestinian armed groups are endangering civilians and hostages by holding them in densely populated areas. He emphasized that these actions could put surrounding civilians and the hostages at "additional risk."
During a regular UN briefing in Geneva, Laurence remarked, "The actions of both sides could potentially constitute war crimes."
Highlighting the ordeal faced by hostages and their families, Laurence said, "The release of four hostages is undoubtedly very good news. These hostages should never have been taken, as it violates international humanitarian law. They should be released as soon as possible."
Laurence also expressed concern over the potential breaches of law by Israeli forces during an operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp last Saturday. According to Palestinian health officials, the operation resulted in the deaths of at least 274 Palestinians, including women and children.
"It was disastrous, the way civilians were suddenly and intensely trapped in violent conditions," Laurence stated.
He mentioned the ongoing Israeli military operations and the conflict that has persisted for over eight months since October 7.
On October 7, approximately 200 people were killed in southern Israel during an attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Around 250 people were abducted by Hamas during this incident, prompting Israel to launch retaliatory attacks on Palestine. The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that these attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 36,730 people in Gaza to date
