In Kuwait fire, 40 Indians among the dead
In a building fire in Kuwait's Ahmadi Governorate area early Wednesday, a total of 49 people were killed, among them 40 Indian citizens. Officials stated that a fire broke out in the kitchen on one of the floors of the six-story building in the Maghnafer area. At the time, the residents of the building were asleep, and most of them died due to smoke inhalation. The news was reported in the Hindustan Times.
According to Arab Times, most of the deceased were residents from India, particularly from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and northern India, with ages ranging from 20 to 50 years.
Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Fahad Al-Yusuf Al-Sabah stated that what happened today was the result of the greed of the employers and building owners. He directed the Kuwait Municipality and Public Authority for Civil Information to take immediate action against similar violations.
The ill-fated building is owned by the NBTC Group, an Indian businessman named K.G. Abraham. In the Arabian Gulf region, low-wage laborers often live in such low-cost rented accommodations and face overcrowded conditions.
In response to this incident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for an urgent meeting with senior officials. Additionally, Foreign Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh may visit Kuwait after the meeting.
